AUSTRALEX DAY CONFERENCE 2000

AND BIENNIAL GENERAL MEETING

Call for papers, nominations to office, and expressions of interest in attendance

CONFERENCE

A one-day conference will be held on 10 July, 2000 at the University of Melbourne’s Trinity College. The date has been chosen to fit in with a variety of linguistic activities taking place in Melbourne at that time: for links to further details see http://www.ali.unimelb.edu.au/. A modest conference fee (in the order of $30) will be charged to cover costs.

Papers will cover a range of topics in lexicography. One session will be on ‘Makers and users: making dictionaries useable’. (How do users cope with explicit and implicit structures, macro- and micro-? How can dictionary makers help? How much do difficulties have to do with makers’ theorising of the lexicon(s) involved, how much with their presentation of it? What are the prerequisite skills for making the intended uses of a given dictionary? What else may users try to do with it, and what may result?)

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Vice-President David Blair is expected to succeed Jane Simpson as President for the period 2000-2002. Nominations for the positions of Vice-President/President Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Committee Members at large will be accepted in advance or at the meeting. Nominations submitted in advance should include an indication of the willingness of the nominee to stand.

CALL FOR PAPERS

All members of AUSTRALEX are invited to suggest activities for the day, and to submit proposals for papers to be read at the conference to the Secretary on the form below or by email with the same information. Papers should be 20-25 minutes in length. All proposals will be assessed by the AUSTRALEX committee; they should be received by 26 April (but the sooner the better!). Acceptance will be confirmed by 5 May. Abstracts of all papers accepted will be posted on the AUSTRALEX website (https://australex.org/a00.htm), together with a program. Full papers may also be published there with the authors’ agreement.
